Ranking at the top of the results in every search engine is a dream of every SEO practitioner. Meta tags are easiest and most convenient ways of describing websites, title, description, keywords and other details in machine readable format.
What Are Meta Tags?
Meta tags provide Meta Data about the HTML document. They are special tags that provide information about the website. Meta tags exist in HTML in  section  and hence are only visible and purposeful for search engines. Meta tags are great ways to provide information about their sites to search engines. 


Do Meta Tags Help SEO?
Yes!  Search Engine reads Meta tags and use the information listed in the tags. Google uses Meta tags and can read bot HTML and XHTML style Meta tags. However, Meta tags alone can’t help to improve the ranking. Meta tags are limited to classifying the website and its content.

How to define Meta tags?
There are many Meta tags that can be defined in your HTML however there are only four major types of Meta tags worth knowing.

Title - This is not a tag. Search engine uses this in conjunction with description tags. This can be up to 70 characters long. They may not be chopped off without being shrunk to relevant text.


Description - A brief description of the page. Search engine uses this description and shows it below the title of the website. The description should be contained within 160 characters.


Keywords - A series of keywords you deem relevant to the page in question. Do not repeat the keywords as you would only get 160 characters to list all of them.

Robots - An indication to search engine crawlers (robots or "bots") as to what they should do with the page.


Meta tags aren’t hard to implement yourself – you don’t really need a programmer, just some experience with HTML
